MORNING MUSINGS
Morning Show Musings for Monday, November 29th
Rick and I hope you had a wonderful Thanksgiving (and that you're not still eating leftovers).
Didja do some Black Friday shopping? According to the National Retail Federation, we Americans spent more this long holiday weekend than last year: 45 billion bucks online and in stores over a four-day period, a jump of 8.7% from 2009. Woo hoo! The recession is totally over, and everything's okay now, right? ...um, right? Click HERE
One gent was hospitalized after being caught in a Black Friday stampede at a Buffalo, New York Target store. Keith Krantz camped out for eight hours in front of the store before the doors opened, then he was jammed against a metal door, shoved to the ground and trampled. But Keith, undaunted, made his way over to the TV section to get a deal, but he collapsed there. Paramedics were called, and they rushed him to the hospital. He suffered a herniated disc in his back. Target says it will pay all his medical bills, but there's no word on whether Keith got his bargain TV. The store adds that they were expecting some Buffalo police officers to be on hand when they opened the store, to hopefully avoid a tragedy like this, but the police were at a shooting and couldn't make it. (This story makes Buffalo look great, doesn't it?) Click HERE to read more.
Rick got caught up in the Cyber Monday hoopla. He stayed up until midnight last night to get a great deal on a piece of exercise equipment that he says will soon become a very expensive place to hang his pants...
According to an annual survey by Career Builder.com, 29% of workers say they have done holiday shopping online at work and 27% of those are planning to spend an hour or more doing it. And more than 1 in 10 workers say they'll spend nearly 2 hours shopping online at work. But shoppers beware; nearly half of surveyed companies say they monitor internet and email use by employees. If you have a hankerin' for some Cyber Monday shopping but you don't know where to go, you could try iTunes. Ya know they have the Beatles now...
This day in 1963, the Beatles released the single "I Want to Hold Your Hand" backed with "This Boy" in the UK. It sold a million copies in three days. Click HERE
Macy's Thanksgiving Day parade had some folks hankerin' for, um other things. Rick watched it from start to finish, but only because of the accidental background. A gi-normous Victoria's Secret ad featuring a lovely blonde woman in her underoos was in the background during every shot of Matt Lauer, Meredith Vieira and Al Roker, as they described the adorable young children, the innocent floats for children, the happy cartoon balloons for children... Perfect.
Okay, I am truly sorry! I've been searching for a shot of this for about an hour, and I've found nothing. Either the Today show folks have done their best to keep pics of this off the internets or I am really tired from the holly-days...
But a scantily clad poster of a woman wasn't as good as real-live women! Crazy real-live women! The parade featured a float carting the current Miss USA, Rima Fakih. Well, it was SUPPOSED to feature just Miss Fakih, but, as the parade was getting underway, one of the young ladies who lost to Rima showed up - Miss New York, Davina Reeves. She didn't even make the Miss USA pageant's top 15, but that didn't stop her from believing with all her heart that she should be included on that float. She fought her way past security, climbed aboard, waved, smiled and signed autographs for FIVE BLOCKS before parade officials could get her off the darn thing. Davina was not arrested for her stunt, and kudos to Miss Fakih, who apparently kept her cool throughout. Donald Trump, who now runs the Miss USA pageant, had no comment. Click HERE
Here are some pics of Rima, the woman Davina Reeves tried to outshine. Good luck, honey. I think Miss Fakih may be un-outshinable... Click HERE
Have you had a bad day lately? Well, this might put your woes into perspective. Boise State's kicker Kyle Brotzman had a rough day on Saturday. He missed two short field goals - one with two seconds left in regulation, the other in OT - during Boise State's 34-31 loss to Nevada that ended the team's 23-game winning streak AND their hopes for playing for the national title. But the good news is that young Kyle has friends, computer-savvy friends. Less than 24 hours after his terrible game, a Facebook page titled "The Bronco Nation Loves Kyle Brotzman" popped up. More than 14-thousand people had clicked the "like" button as of last night. Of course, there were sights popping up with opposing views, too, but, Kyle, dude, don't look at those... Click HERE
