The King's Speech
Most of us have a fear of public speaking. It's terrifying to imagine having to give a presentation at work or school. Now imagine having to talk to millions of people about serious things with a serious speech impediment. Imagine being thrust into the role of king of your country just as Adolf Hitler is about to force the world into war. That's the crux of "The King's Speech," and probably nothing I can say will do this wonderful movie justice. Just go see it. Colin Firth plays King George VI of England, the father of England's current Queen Elizabeth. ...

All Good Things
Ryan Gosling is one of the top actors of his generation. Frank Langella is at the top of the list in his. And the two of them together are well worth watching. "All Good Things" is not all good, but it's definitely worth a look. The film is based on the true story of Robert Durst, the son of a wealthy NYC real-estate mogul, whose wife disappeared mysteriously and was never found. The husband was suspected but never tried for her murder. David Marks (Gosling) is the son who would rather open a health food store in the backwoods than ...

True Grit
Why remake the classic John Wayne western "True Grit"? THIS is why. The Coen brothers ("No Country for Old Men" and "Fargo") wanted to focus on Charles Portis' book, rather than the John Wayne film for their movie, and the result is a grittier, truer tale than the 1969 version. Jeff Bridges takes on the John Wayne role of Rooster Cogburn, the one-eyed, aging, eternally drunk Marshall that young Mattie Ross (an amazing Hailee Steinfeld) hires to gun down the man who kilt her daddy. But another lawman is on the hunt, (Matt Damon, having fun as a puffed-up Texas ...

Cirque Dreams Holidaze
Cirque Dreams Holidaze runs through December 29th at the Fox Theatre What show can hold the attention of 6 to 60 year-olds for two hours? The latest from Cirque Productions succeeds. The feeble premise of "Cirque Dreams Holidaze" is that a bunch of Christmas ornaments come to life and sing and dance and perform physical feats in outlandish costumes. But the premise, that connecting tissue of the songs and the 'story,' just isn't important in this type of show. What matters is that the acts you'll see will absolutely amaze you with what the human body can do and with ...

I Love You Phillip Morris
If you didn't know this film was based on a true story, you'd dismiss it for being completely ridiculous. But, truth, as they say, is stranger than fiction, and this true story is about as strange as it gets. Jim Carrey plays Steven Russell, a man who begins as a law enforcement officer and ends up a con man, faking falls for cash, using "borrowed" credit cards, even trying court cases without anything close to a law degree. Not surprisingly, he ends up in prison. But it's not all bad, because there he finds his true love, Phillip Morris, a ...

Tron
I saw the first Tron film back in 1982. My brother loved it. I fell asleep. Visually, it was really cool and state-of-the-art, but I couldn't follow the story and just didn't care enough about the characters to stick with it. Nearly three decades later, "Tron: Legacy" is really cool and state-of-the-art, but I couldn't follow the story and just didn't care enough about the characters to stick with it. Jeff Bridges reprises his role as Kevin Flynn, the phenom software programmer and CEO who mysteriously disappeared twenty years ago. Flynn's son, Sam, (Garrett Hedlund) desperately searches for his dad, ...

The Fighter
I don't like boxing. So why do I love boxing movies? "Rocky" will probably always be on my top 10 list of favorite films. And "The Fighter" is definitely in my top 10 list of favorite films this year. Here's another story that, if it weren't based on a true story, I would have panned it for being over-the-top, ridiculous, unbelievable. But, you meet the actual people in this story, and your realize the actors are actually UNDER-playing their eccentricities. Micky Ward (Mark Wahlberg) wants to be a professional boxer like his older brother, Dicky Eklund (Christian Bale). And his ...

The Tourist
Take the parts of those early 1960s romantic capers that you hate most, and mix 'em with the parts of modern action comedies you hate most. You'll get "The Tourist."Angelina Jolie is gorgeous. She's mysterious. And she's being watched by lots of guys: strangers on the street who can't stop looking at her behind and various countries' law enforcement officials who can't stop looking at her behind. The police are allegedly using her to get to a master thief they've been hunting for years, so this master thief devises a plan to have Jolie find a stranger on a ...
