You are trying to sleep and you keep thinking thoughts that distress you. Let's say you are worrying because a loved one is out and they should be home by now. Thoughts of car crashes and violence come easily at these times and can become extremely distressing.
Using your OSB, mentally drag any negative or worrisome thought to your mental trash can. You can see it get fat with your uncomfortable thoughts. Then hit your mental "Empty Trash" key and bingo!.... they are gone! The trash can is now empty and your uncomfortable thoughts are vaporized.
There is still one more very important step. Replace that uncomfortable thought with something that makes you smile. See your loved one walking in the door safe and sound and smiling! You must replace the discarded thought with one that gives you relief!
You will also find that you may have to repeat this process many times. Anyone who has operated a computer knows that you may think that you have gotten rid of something only to have it reappear somewhere else. If you have been thinking a certain way for a long time, it can take a while to change it. Mental rigor is very important for this to work. Staying with it and constantly trashing negative thoughts and replacing them with positive thoughts will become easier and easier with practice until it becomes automatic.
Sometimes it is easier to completely change the subject. Trash your negative thoughts and replace them with anything that makes you feel better. You can even have a few go-to places in your mental computer. Pick a memory when you were triumphant or very happy. It can be as simple as hitting a home run in little league or getting a good word from your boss for a job well done. Anytime you start fretting about something, you could go right to one of your pre-sets!
This is a relatively simple concept but that doesn't mean that it is easy. You can get amazing results from this but you have to be rigorous about it. If you have been worrying about this and that for most of your life, it is going to take a while to change that around. If you follow the OSB it will work for you.
A computer and your mind does what you tell it to. You may have heard the computer expression "Garbage in, Garbage out." If you load your computer with garbage, it can only give you garbage back. What you are doing is replacing your mental garbage with relief and results.
Relief and results in, relief and results out!
