4/9/2010

Opening today (April 9th) is The Runaways, starring Dakota Fanning and Kristen Stewart. The biopic followd Joan Jett, played by Stewart, and Cherie Currie, played by Fanning, as they become the frontwomen for the Runaways, the now legendary group that paved the way for female rockers.

The Runaways is rated R and has a running time of 1 hour and 45 minutes.

Dakota Fanning on meeting the real Cherie: ''Well, I think meeting Cherie, and I saw her perform before I filmed, and I watched a lot of the live in Japan videos and worked on being able to sing her songs - the songs that she sings, and just being the performer that she was because she's so iconic and does like a certain thing each time she performs, Cherry Bomb, especially. It's like a set routine and I wanted to have that right.''

Joan Jett on female pop stars: ''Pop singers is completely different from what we do, and what we did. You know, what we were doing, even though it obviously touches on sexuality and giving voice to that, for me, it was about showing girls that they had other avenues. It wasn't just about music, but anything. Whether you wanted to be a scientist, you want to be anything that's not what you're expected to do.''

Kristen Stewart on having the real Joan Jett and Cherie on set: ''It would have been a much more superficial telling of the story had we just looked at anything that every fan could, because they told us stuff that they wouldn't tell anybody. Not that that needs to be in the movie, but sort of have to know it to be able to play who they are, essentially. And they were so open and wonderful, and they because really close to us, so it was like really great.''

Kristen Stewart on the story: ''The Runaways is about two girls, one of which is highly successful and famous, Joan Jett, and the other is just as successful but in a different way, which is sort of the story. It's a story about two girls who are sort of fighting for independence, but just in that they were the first girls to pick up instruments and play really aggressive rock and roll, and people didn't want to hear that.''

Joan Jett wants to start an all girls rock band: (Joan) ''I'm Joan Jett. Um, I play guitar, electric guitar.'' (Man) ''Oh. Joan Jett, that's a cool name. You guys got a demo?'' (Joan) ''No. No I don't. No guys. I wanna start an all girls rock band.'' (Man) ''Really? Hey Sandy. Sandy West is a drummer. Joan Jett claims to be some sort of guitar goddess.'' (Joan) ''Well, I didn't say that.''
