I have to confess that, whenever The Muny produces one of the "golden oldies" of musical theatre, I head to Forest Park with dread. I think, "I cannot see another production of this show!" And then I get there, and I love it! Those classic shows are classics BECAUSE they're good. And I smiled and cried and hummed along (quietly, I promise) all night, despite a few raindrops.
You know the story, of course. Maria thinks she wants to be a nun, but the other nuns at Nonnberg Abbey think God might have other plans for her, so they ask her to become a governess for Captain von Trapp's children, who've been raised as if they were sailors on their stern daddy's ship. Everyone falls in love with everyone else, but then the Nazis threaten Austria, and the family has to flee their beloved country.
As usual, The Muny has found amazing voices: Ashley Brown for Maria, Linda Mugleston for Mother Abbess, Jessica Grove as the oldest von Trapp child, Liesl, and Tom Hewitt as Captain von Trapp. And the little ones are just as cute as they can be.
And, let me give my annual shout-out to the designers and craftspeople and crews who create, build and move those sets and costumes around. Some of the prettiest paintings you'll see anywhere are up on that enormous stage week after week.
If you thought you might skip this one, because you've seen "The Sound of Music" oh-so-many times before, I encourage you to give it another viewing.
