August: Osage County
Fabulous Fox Theatre: 3/2 - 14, 2010

I’ve heard so many good things about this play, and, that always scares me, because I’m afraid the show will never live up to the hype. But this family dramedy exceeded all my expectations! It’s a brilliant script (no wonder it won a Tony and a Pulitzer), hilariously funny, often dramatic, with distinct and memorable characters that I really cared about and related to.

The story is about a family getting together because the patriarch goes missing. The aging mother (brilliantly played by Estelle Parsons, probably best known for her TV work on “Roseanne” and for winning a Best Supporting Actress Oscar for “Bonnie and Clyde”), her three daughters, their various spouses/boyfriends/fiancés/kid, the gabby aunt, her quiet husband, and their ne’er do well son, and a new housekeeper are not used to all being together under one roof, and, as with most families, all the old fusses and grudges keep bubbling up, as well as some really funny, funny moments.

Be warned! This play is 3+ hours long, but I truly enjoyed every minute of it, and it’s given me a lot to think about regarding my own family. Thank goodness my brood isn’t as messed up as this clan, but there are parallels!

And this production is for grownups. This is a show about adult topics and using adult language and no little one is going to have any interest in this story, anyway.

I hope you get the chance to see this!
